Technology as Driver for Morally Motivated Conceptual Engineering

چکیده

Abstract New technologies are the source of uncertainties about applicability moral and morally connotated concepts. These sometimes call for conceptual engineering, but it is not often recognized when this case. We take to be a missed opportunity, as recognition that different researchers working on same kind project can help solve methodological questions one likely encounter. In paper, we present three case studies where philosophers technology implicitly engage in engineering (without naming such). subsequently reflect find out how these illustrate an appropriate method deal with pressing concerns philosophy technology. have two main goals. first want contribute literature by presenting concrete examples This especially relevant, because designed based work done potentially crucial social implications. Secondly, make explicit what choices made doing work. Making some implicit assumptions are, fact, debated allows reflection questions. Ultimately, our hope conscious leads improvement done.

Are Morally-Motivated 1 Running Head: MORALLY-MOTIVATED DECISION MAKING Are Morally-Motivated Decision Makers Insensitive to the Consequences of their Choices?

Is morally motivated decision making different from others kinds of decision making? There is evidence that when people have sacred or protected values (PVs) they reject tradeoffs for secular values (e.g.” You can’t put a price on a human life.”) and tend to employ deontological rather than consequentialist decision principles. People motivated by PVs appear to show “quantity insensitivity.” Th...

When Do Morally Motivated Innovators Elicit Inspiration Instead of Irritation?

Innovators (i.e., consumers who are the first to adopt an innovation) are pivotal for the societal diffusion of sustainable innovations. But when are innovators most influential? Recent work suggests that morally motivated innovators (i.e., consumers who adopt an innovation out of concern for the welfare of others) can make fellow consumers who have not yet adopted that innovation feel morally ...

Software Engineering as Technology Transfer

We propose, as a challenge to the software engineering research community, a new view of software engineering as technology transition. In this view, the role of software engineering is to take the initial results of theorists and harden these results to the point where they are ready to be used in fielded, commercial systems. Current techniques for software verification, while adequate for ser...

Experimentally Motivated Transformations for Intermodel Links Between Conceptual Models

Complex system development and information integration at the conceptual layer raises the requirement to be able to declare intermodel assertions between entities in models that may, or may not, be represented in the same modelling language. This is compounded by the fact that semantically equivalent notions may have been represented with a different element, such as an attribute or class. We f...
